Prosecutor's Office Aware of Price-Gouging Concerns Following Flood
ZANESVILLE, OHIO — The Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office is aware of concerns regarding potential price gouging in the wake of the devastating flooding that has affected our community.
Muskingum County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Welch has been in contact with the Office of Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson regarding concerns raised by members of the public. Attorney General Wilson and his staff have already conducted meetings and are evaluating the situation to determine an appropriate course of action.
Ohio does not currently have a statute that specifically addresses price gouging. Complaints involving excessive or exploitative pricing are therefore handled at the state level by the Ohio Attorney General's Office, which can evaluate whether the conduct violates the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act or other consumer-protection laws.
“Our community has suffered significant losses, and many residents are now faced with the difficult task of repairing their homes, replacing essential property, and rebuilding their lives,” Welch said. “This is not a time for anyone to take unfair advantage of families who are already struggling. We take these concerns seriously and are working with the Attorney General’s Office to ensure they receive appropriate review.”
Residents who believe they have encountered excessive pricing should keep track of all available information, including receipts, contracts, advertisements, photographs, text messages, emails, and the names of the individuals or businesses involved.
The Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office will continue communicating with the Attorney General's Office as the situation is evaluated and additional information becomes available.
“Our first priority is protecting the people of Muskingum County,” Welch said. “Those affected by this disaster deserve compassion, honest assistance, and fair treatment—not exploitation.”
