Putnam Tavern Assault Defendant Sentenced to 36 Months in Prison
(ZANESVILLE, OH)
On November 7, 2025, Tydell Butcher, 36, of Zanesville, appeared in the Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas for sentencing on a felony of the third-degree Attempted Felonious Assault charge.
The charge stems from a 2024 incident where Butcher assaulted a man in a local bar. The assault resulted in the victim suffering a concussion and fractures to his sinus and orbital bones.
Butcher apologized for his actions and acknowledged that he was wrong for hitting the man.
After hearing from the defense, the defendant, and the State, Judge Cottrill sentenced Butcher to the maximum 36 months in prison.
Prosecutor Welch stated, "the State is satisfied the defendant admitted his guilt and acknowledged he was wrong for striking the victim."
Prior to this resolution, two juries had been unable to reach a verdict which resulted in mistrials. The mistrials occurred because the jury could not come to a unanimous decision. This means some jurors believed the defendant to be guilty while others determined they were not convinced of Butcher's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
“A hung jury does not erase the truth,” Prosecutor Welch stated, “it simply means twelve citizens could not reach a unanimous decision. When that happens, justice demands persistence, not surrender. Our duty as prosecutors is to see the case through until a fair and just result is achieved."
