Serial Assaulter, Drug Dealer Sentenced to 5 Years

Nathan Tate, 31, of Zanesville appeared before Common Pleas Judge Kelly Cottrill Monday morning to receive his sentence on his most recent assaultive behavior. Tate pled guilty as charged to an indictment for felonious assault in December.

Tate attempted multiple excuses for his behavior in Court, attempting to blame the victim of his unprovoked attack, and announcing that because his victim did not call the police and did not want to pursue charges, that he should not be punished.

Judge Cottrill saw the case a different way. He questioned Tate concerning a 2023 incident when he beat his girlfriend and stole her car. The Judge noted that during both cases, Tate was on post-release control for his previous offense of selling drugs.

Despite the crimes committed while on supervision, Tate’s post-release control was terminated early by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

The State deferred to Judge Cottrill’s judgment in imposing sentence, making no argument one way or another.

In the end, Judge Cottrill concluded that a sentence of five to seven-and-a-half mandatory years was appropriate for this, yet another, offense in a career of crimes which have defined Tate’s life.

“Judge Cottrill saw through Mr. Tate’s extensive excuses and sent him back to prison where he belongs,” according to Assistant Prosecutor John Litle. “If he cannot separate himself from a street mentality during that time, I am sure we will see him again.”
