Zanesville Man Charged with Domestic Violence Sentenced to 50 Months in Prison
On June 23, 2025, Jakory Sutton of Zanesville, OH, received sentencing for charges stemming from Sutton violently attacking his girlfriend.
Sutton’s charges included Strangulation, Domestic Violence, and two counts of Endangering Children.
For these charges Judge Cottrill imposed a total prison sentence of 30 months.
This sentence was ordered to be served consecutively to sentencing Sutton received for two other cases involving Vandalism and Possession of Drugs. This brought Sutton’s total prison sentence to fifty (50) months in prison.
Sutton will also be on post-release control for one to three years when he is released from prison.
Details of the Case:
The case began on November 2, 2024. Around 3 in the morning, Sutton awoke his victim’s children to loud noises and their mother crying.
After investigating, one of the children could hear Sutton strangling their mother. After entering the room to help, the child witnessed Sutton standing over and kicking their mother in the stomach. After helping their mother to the bathroom, the child noted that they could see her skull through the bleeding. Responding officers found and photographed a pool of blood on the ground where Sutton attacked his victim.
While in the bathroom, Sutton made another attack and slammed his victim repeatedly into the bathroom wall while holding her by the throat. Numerous photos taken throughout the house showed fresh blood stains on bedding, woodwork, and puddled in various locations on the floor.
The children called 911 requesting help and medical assistance.
Sutton and his victim both verbally attacked the children for calling the police, and Sutton’s victim assisted him in fleeing the house.
Later, after leaving Sutton at an undisclosed location, the victim of the offense was located by law enforcement, and although she lied to the officers about the attack, responding officers photographed blood matted in her hair.
Sutton was later arrested on unrelated charges and then released on a reduced bond before the bond was ultimately revoked in Common Pleas Court.
“Cases of this nature are very difficult,” according to APA Litle who handled the case. “Where children are put in a position to witness domestic abuse, it has long-term negative effects upon the children. Young girls come to believe this is how they can expect to be treated, and young boys learn that this is the way to treat women.”
Children are in a helpless position in these situations, and their wellbeing is paramount to the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office.
Any criminal case becomes much more difficult to prove when those who are physically abused refuse to tell the truth, and in rare situations there can be charges related to a parent’s refusal to protect their children from experiencing these types of events.
“This case demonstrates what we see in the vast majority of crimes – the continuous overlap of involvement with illegal drugs, anti-social behavior, violence, and victimization,” according to Litle. “Fortunately, the people of Muskingum County will be free of that behavior from Mr. Sutton for the next four years.”
