Zanesville Police Acquire Armored Tactical Vehicle with Drug Forfeiture Funds
The Zanesville Police Department has significantly upgraded its tactical response capabilities with the acquisition of a new Lenco BearCat armored vehicle—fully funded through drug-related asset forfeitures secured by the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office. The forfeitures are a direct result of the law enforcement efforts of all local agencies, especially the Zanesville Police Department and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office.
This high-performance vehicle is specifically designed to protect law enforcement officers during high-risk operations, including active shooter scenarios, hostage rescues, and standoffs with armed suspects. The BearCat replaces an outdated model and ensures that first responders have the equipment necessary to safely and effectively manage dangerous situations.
The purchase was made possible without any taxpayer funding, thanks to the Muskingum County Law Enforcement Trust Fund. These funds, obtained through the seizure of assets from convicted drug traffickers and other offenders, are reinvested into local public safety efforts.
“Utilizing money taken from criminals to enhance our law enforcement capabilities is both practical and principled,” said Muskingum County Prosecutor Ron Welch. “These individuals sought to harm our community, and now their forfeited assets are being used to protect it. This is a clear example of justice working full circle.”
Over the past four years, the Prosecutor’s Office has allocated more than $2 million in forfeiture proceeds to support community safety efforts—including drug education, prevention and rehabilitation programs, re-entry services, and critical law enforcement equipment like the BearCat.
The Zanesville Police Department, founded in 1865, currently consists of 59 sworn officers and 33 support staff. This latest investment marks a significant step forward in ensuring officer safety and enhancing the department’s readiness to respond to evolving threats.
